Science fiction is a very popular genre in young adult fiction around the world. South African authors also make use of science fiction to imagine the future, with stories of clones, climate change, apocalyptic disasters, dystopic future governments, developments in science and technology, and more.
In this talk Crystal Warren will give an overview of the field, showcasing some of the authors writing science fiction and highlighting the main themes and trends. This talk will be of interest to teachers, teenagers, teachers, librarians or lovers of science fiction.
Crystal Warren has worked as a librarian, literary researcher and museum curator. She is the manager of the Curatorial Division at Amazwi South African Museum of Literature. An avid reader and lifelong fan of science fiction she is currently working on a Masters degree in English Literature, focusing on South African teenage speculative fiction (looking specifically at dystopian and postapocalyptic literature.
