With Makhalima’s work he seeks to explore the modest everyday life lived in a black society, be it in townships or remote areas. He aims to highlight the simplicity, sometimes seen as ignorance, and enjoyment of life lived even with challenges that are continuously faced. This is what, ‘My resistance art’, if you choose, portray and illustrates this way of life by use of sculpture and painting. Using sculpture, his work is a documentation of social dialogue of immediate happenings in otherwise unrecorded everyday occurrences in townships, informal settlements and street landscapes of East London, and capturing their vibrant, seeming carefree interactions within their environment. The details in each work, donates an interpretation of a free life punctuated and curiosity of un-orchestrated street life.
