Coming out of Johannesburg’s Fuba Academy, Lucas Bambo has had several solo exhibitions in South Africa and has been involved in group shows in Norway, the US, France, Hungary, the UK and Mexico. In 1997, he received a merit award in the Volkskas Bank Atelier Awards; in 1999 he won the Absa Bank Millennium National Art Competition; and in 2003, he was a finalist in the Brett Kebble Art Award. Bambo currently produces his work in a studio in Pretoria. He works primarily as a printmaker using linocut as his medium. Bambo’s use of line and pattern, characteristic of his style, creates a whimsical rhythm to the works, encouraging viewers to reflect on his narratives, experiencing South Africa and daily life through an artist’s eyes. Bambo has participated in many iterations of the National Arts festival, and these works form part of a large body of linocut works.
